Looking Good Feeling Good My Brothah

In answer to the old age question --What does a magnet stuck to your skull look like? --it looks like a magnet stuck to your skull. Cept from the front, where it is completely invisible. But note the extreme handsomeness.

What is that magnet for? Does everyone with an implant wear that? Forgive the question since I only know a little about cochlear implants.

Gary, hi.

Yes, everyone with an implant gets a magnet.

Underneath the skin where the magnet sticks, is a transmitter. Sound comes into the implant through the behind-the-ear piece, where it is translated into code. This code is transmitted through the skin at the magnet and then travels down a wire to the cochlea (in the inner ear), where the actual implant is. The implant takes the code and fires off electrical pulses which the brain reads as sound.

There are several reasons the magnet is so far from the ear; reasons which I can't recall just now. There are also new implant systems in development which have different transmission systems, but currently all implants have some sort of magnet.

Feel free to ask any questions.
